We all know the importance of location when it comes to buying a house. It’s one of the few aspects of a property that you just can’t change! That’s why it’s so important to fully understand where a property is and what’s available locally before committing to making it your home.

Update from site

Before getting into the details, here’s an update from Broad Lane Farm. Plots 2 and 3 will be receiving their rooves in the next couple of weeks. Plots 5 and 6 are also well underway (up to first floor level), with Plot 4 coming out of the ground shortly. Drainage work across the site is well underway and the estate road will be taking shape soon.

Upperthong and the Holme Valley

Holmfirth and its surrounding villages have long been regarded as one of West Yorkshire’s most desirable areas. The ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ era raised the profile of the area and events like the 2014 Tour De France and subsequent editions of the Tour De Yorkshire, keep the area in the spotlight.

Holmfirth Centre is a great resource to have on your doorstep. Just a short walk down Broad Lane and you arrive in the historic centre with a plethora of eating and drinking options. There’s live music at the Picturedrome and annual events like the Holmfirth Folk Festival, Film Festival, famous sheep dog trials and bike and fell running events.

The nearby village of Honley offers further restaurants and drinking options and hosts its annual Honley Show (like a local version of the Great Yorkshire Show). Hinchliffe’s farm shop (the oldest farms shop in Britain) is a short drive away, with a fantastic café and the opportunity to buy high quality local produce.

The Peak District National Park is on your doorstep, with a vast wilderness to explore, so the most adventurous outdoors fanatic won’t run out of space to roam! The houses at Broad Lane Farm look across the valley onto Holme Moss and its famous winding Pennine road, featured in the 2014 Tour De France and on every road cyclist’s bucket list. The village of Holme at the start of the climb is a wonderful pretty village with cobbled streets, a nice pub and village store and fantastic walking around the reservoirs and pine forests.

You may also be surprised to learn that the Holme Valley also has its own vineyard – the ‘Holmfirth Vineyard’, on a hillside above the village of Holmbridge, which has been featured on several TV programmes, including Countryfile. At the vineyard you can do tours, sample wine and enjoy their restaurant with far reaching views.

Schools and Childcare

We know how important local schools can be when choosing where to live. Fortunately, living in Upperthong, you are in the catchment area for some of the best schools in Kirklees.

If you have young children, the Carousel nursery literally next door to Broad Lane Farm is excellent and currently rated good by Ofsted with some outstanding features.

Once your little ones reach school age, Upperthong Junior and Infant School, which is a few minutes’ walk away, was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2017. Broad Lane Farm is within the catchment area for Holmfirth High School, which is also currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and is well regarded locally as one of the best schools in Kirklees. Following school, Greenhead College, located in Huddersfield Town Centre, is one of the top performing 6th form colleges in the country.

Living at Broad Lane Farm, you really do get the best of both worlds, with a rural, village setting and country lifestyle, whilst having access to plenty of modern facilities and transport links.
